Course Description

This course will center abolitionist ideas and examine what indigent defense looks like when practiced by an activist attorney. Students--non attorneys welcome and encouraged!--will examine the role that pro bono representation plays in cases that range from advocacy for vulnerable survivors of violence, human rights violations of asylum seekers, and post conviction criminal defense for prisoners. The class will also delve into the government's responses to resistance, including the criminalization of human rights defenders. Together, we will analyze case studies and emphasize organizing and critical investigation of the law. A great introduction for anyone interested in how the law can be used as a sword and a shield to protect us from oppressive state actors.
