The regular world made strange. Almost all stories start in a position of absolute normalcy, and then something happens that drives the action forward. The world is one way, and then it isn't, and we follow along this journey to see how a character or situation may change and adapt to the new circumstances.
In this mundane to magic class, we will study and examine the way that normal life can be disrupted by magical aspects, be they surreal, actual magic, or some other way. Our guides along this journey will be esteemed authors such as Lydia Davis, Haruki Murakami, Ali Smith, Nikolai Gogol, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, and more.
Throughout our reading experience, we will concurrently write our own stories that participate in conversation with the ones that we read. The goal is to slowly develop and create a tale of our own that we feel confident and secure in sharing by the end of the class.
